This month’s featured model of a blue Breitling Emergency watch is a gorgeous piece of work, both realistic and highly detailed. We were very happy to have a chat with the artist, Milos Jakubec, who modeled this exquisite timepiece out of his desire to own one for himself. Find out what else drives Milos to great heights in our newest Featured Artist interview!
How long have you been an artist?
I started working with 3ds Max in August 2006, so this will be my seventh year with 3ds Max. And, of course, when I was child, I drew many pictures.
How did you get your start as a 3D modeler?
At first, I worked in Autodesk Inventor and worked on bicycle models, but only for fun. After six months on Inventor, my friend from school showed me 3ds Max, and my parents got Internet access at home. On the Internet, I found many tutorials and started learning 3ds Max.
What do you think is the most important thing to consider as a 3D artist?
There are two important things.
The first is to find something I like making. When making something in 3D that I’m not interested in, I don’t enjoy the work. So, the resulting 3D model is not as good as making something I would have been interested in.
Second is having many references– it´s very hard when I don´t know how my future model will look. The best way is to see it in person before I make it myself.
Your work seems to focus on timepieces. Where do you find your inspiration?
I find inspiration everywhere, especially when I’m walking and seeing the countryside. But in the last three or four years, I’ve fallen in love in with wrist watches. They’re my hobby, and modeling watches is relaxing for me.
Also, I always wanted a real Breitling watch, and the only way for a student to afford one is by buying a fake, or in my case, making it in 3D. Many times, I’ll make something that I would like to have.
How long did it take to create this Breitling piece?
This is a one-year-old model. I started it in July 2012, and published it in October of that year. I was also working on many other models, so I worked on this one in my free time. My very good friend (another TurboSquid artist, 811) helped me with scene setup, and I think the results are great.
What’s been your experience with the CheckMate standard?
Only the best! I didn´t sell my models anywhere before, and I think CheckMate was the only option for me.
Sometimes sellers need time to check all the tasks and rules, but when I work on a model with CheckMate, it´s not a problem for me. And the customers get a very good model, with all specifications that they want.
How long have you been with TurboSquid? Has it also been a positive experience?
My first published model, the furniture from my room, was added in January 2007. In 2009, I started to sell models more regularly. Before this, I had very few sales for a very long time, maybe one every three months. But after 2009, I started selling many models. I don´t know why– maybe because I added more models, or some customers began to know me. But my sales really started growing!
In the future, I wish that I could earn money only from Turbosquid, working under palm trees in some paradise. I’d recommend TurboSquid to others.
And in the end, I would like to thank my family and friends who believed in and supported me. And, of course, thank you to TurboSquid for this interview!
