3D Modeling Standards: Scene Organization

When you’re creating a 3D model to sell at TurboSquid, you give the topology and textures a great deal of thought, making the model as clean and professional as you can. With these important things to think about, you might not be considering exactly how the customer is going to experience the model in his/her workflow.

We’ve already discussed naming objects, and everyone seems to agree that this is a good practice. But there are a number of other things you can do to make the customer experience better. You can:

  • Center the object at or near 0,0,0 so the customer easily can find it easily after merging.
  • Include a parent object, or group all objects together. Then the customer can just pick up the whole object at once and move it to where it’s supposed to go.
  • Freeze the object’s transforms. This will eliminate unpleasant surprises when the customer animates the model.

    I think it is best to unite all parts of the model in one group and more convenient to work, just be sure to give this group the original name, which could then easily be found in the 3D scene.
